SonyLIV’s Q2 2025 Shake-Up: Hits, Misses & Malayalam Wins

SonyLIV started off its proceedings a bit more slowly than its other OTT competitors at the beginning of 2025. But in the last three months, things have changed — the platform has delivered more projects (while still being careful and strategic). Yet, it performed better in Q2 2025 compared to Q1.

Here’s the Q2 2025 report for SonyLIV!

April 2025

SonyLIV’s first big show of the month was Chamak: The Conclusion. Viewers had high expectations for this entry, considering how well its previous season did. However, despite strong performances (particularly from Paramvir Singh Cheema and Manoj Pahwa), this season struggled with underdeveloped plots, excessive violence, and a wasted musical setting, ultimately failing to deliver emotional depth or originality.

Adrishyam Season 2 was a letdown, too, although it didn’t flop as badly as the first season.

The Malayalam murder mystery Pravinkoodu Shappu earned a more positive response upon its OTT release. It was praised for its gripping suspense, top-tier action sequences (bus chase, shop fight), and a brilliant climax. However, some viewers found the plot predictable, and the comedy hit-or-miss.

SonyLIV wrapped up the month with another popular Malayalam flick, Bromance, an action-comedy. This chaotic film delved into the world of Gen Z, delivering a fast-paced and entertaining experience packed with laughs.

The platform also released some foreign titles — Doc, This City Is Ours, and The Narrow Road to the Deep North. While their critical reception was mostly decent, they failed to generate substantial online buzz. This shows that while SonyLIV is doing well with its regional content library, it could consider adding more foreign titles with popular performers or large-scale productions to expand its overall content lineup.

May 2025

SonyLIV dropped Black, White and Gray, which turned out to be far better than expected, especially considering the lack of promotions and online buzz before its release. Thanks to the cast (particularly Mayur Moore), strong direction, and the brilliant execution of the mockumentary-style format, the series did quite well among Indian viewers.

Kankhajura received more promotional effort from SonyLIV, and it performed well too. It was praised for its performances (especially Roshan Mathew and Mohit Raina), strong direction, and a gripping storyline, though it kinda fell flat in the end.

We also got another Malayalam gem from SonyLIV this month — Basil Joseph’s Maranamass. The project benefited from its unique yet darkly humorous take on the serial killer genre. While some found its second half a bit weak, most pointed to out its brilliant handling of pacing and comedy.

June 2025

Following a strong May, SonyLIV’s content output saw a notable decline in June. The platform added only two licensed titles: Alappuzha Gymkhana, a Malayalam sports drama that significantly boosted viewership, and Alert: Missing Persons Unit Season 3. This lack of new original content was a major concern for the month.

While SonyLIV has maintained a consistent focus on strategically expanding its regional offerings, particularly in Malayalam, over the last three months, its original shows have overall received mixed reactions from viewers. Going forward, the platform should focus on increasing the number of original productions to strengthen its content libraries. Stay tuned for more updates.
