Tamil Series ‘The Game’ Signals Netflix’s New Play

The last 2–3 years have shown us that pan-India shows with big names or a sheer volume of content are not enough for OTT players in India to survive and stay competitive. They also need regional and diverse content, stories that resonate with audiences on both an emotional and cultural level. For a while, Netflix leaned heavily on pan-India originals to strengthen its foothold in the Indian OTT landscape, but it has now shifted focus toward regional content.

The announcement of Netflix India’s first Tamil series of 2025, The Game: You Never Play Alone, starring Shraddha Srinath, is more than just a new show; it’s a strategic move that highlights the streamer’s efforts to build a stronger presence in a fiercely competitive regional market.

This ambitious project comes out of a significant partnership with Applause Entertainment, a production house that has delivered plenty of gems to Indian OTT audiences in the past.

Applause has an outstanding track record, responsible for some of the most critically acclaimed and commercially successful Indian web shows, including the genre-defining Scam 1992: The Harshad Mehta Story, the gripping legal drama Criminal Justice, the nuanced political saga City of Dreams, and the recently acclaimed prison drama Black Warrant.

The collaboration with Applause is a crucial step for Netflix as it tries to bridge the gap with homegrown rivals. Platforms like SonyLIV and ZEE5 already enjoy a significant head start in the regional content race.

SonyLIV, for instance, has strategically invested in a wide range of regional films and shows, particularly in Malayalam, Telugu, and Tamil. This approach has helped the platform not only grow its subscriber base in South Indian markets but also introduce a wider audience to high-quality regional storytelling.

ZEE5, meanwhile, has made regional content its core identity. With a library spanning over 12 Indian languages, the platform has tapped into markets that were largely underserved by international streamers. By offering a mix of original series and an expansive archive of TV shows in multiple languages, ZEE5 has built strong brand loyalty among its viewers.

Netflix’s partnership with Applause shows that the streaming giant wants to replicate a proven formula. The Game, a character-driven Tamil thriller, is a gamble that could pay off handsomely. It’s also a clear signal that Netflix is moving beyond simply dubbing its global hits and is serious about telling authentic, local stories.
