India’s streaming platforms are entering a new phase, where they are no longer limited to the Hindi belt only. They are ready to experiment and expand their slate with storytelling from Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam. Almost every major OTT service is expanding its presence in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam content. Netflix has rolled out its first complete slate of Tamil and Telugu originals and Stephen has already released. Jio Hotstar is preparing a huge South focused showcase in South Unbound. SonyLIV is adding new titles across genres from political dramas like Mayasabha to thrillers like Kuttaram Purindhavan. The competition to win South Indian viewers has never been stronger, and the momentum is clearly shifting toward platforms that invest early and invest big.
In the middle of all this activity, Prime Video stands out for a different reason. The platform once enjoyed a reputation for being balanced in its regional offerings, but that picture is changing. While Prime Video does have a few Tamil and Telugu originals, the overall output is modest. It feels small when compared to the aggressive slates announced by its rivals. Viewers from the South are looking for fresh stories, distinctive voices and consistent releases, and right now other platforms are the ones meeting that demand.
This gap matters. South Indian audiences are shaping national viewing trends, and the industries themselves are producing some of the most inventive work in the country. If a platform is not present in that space, it slowly loses cultural relevance. Prime Video is still respected, but it risks slipping behind if it does not expand with intention. To stay truly pan India, it needs to match the energy of the market rather than watch from the sidelines. The opportunity is wide open, but the window will not stay open forever.
