A major part of the festive season is coming together with one’s family and celebrating, not only in terms of related activities, but by also indulging in playing games and watching films. The latter reason is perhaps why the last weekend of October was laden with release after release, especially on OTT platforms.
Considering that Diwali is a time period wherein a majority of the Indian population is given time off of work, it is but natural for OTT platforms to queue releases, especially in a wide array of languages. However, that concept doesn’t seem to have worked well this time around.
Take for example the case of highly awaited titles on Netflix this week: the Hindi-language thriller drama ‘Do Patti’, as well as the Tamil-language feel-good family drama ‘Meiyazhagan’. Not only had both of the titles generated quite the online buzz, the latter had even had an above-average theatrical run.
Nonetheless, both films have had a lukewarm and underwhelming opening response on Netflix. One reason for this could be that most viewers are in fact, busiest before festive holidays due to reasons like travelling to their hometowns and finishing up with their work before time.
This surely does not leave a whole lot of room for them to sit and enjoy new releases. Which is to say, with the onset of the festive holidays for the year, Netflix can only hope that more viewers come together to stream both these highly awaited films!
