While JioCinema is struggling with original stories to attract new subscribers, JioStudios has already given two of the most successful films of the year. Both ‘Stree 2’ and ‘Laapata Ladies’ are from JioStudios and they are not even action entertainers and are from not so popular genres. Two women centric films making it so big at the box office and OTT and also one of them being India’s selection for Oscars is great, and it comes as a shock that both the films come from JioStudios and the OTT branch of the same production house is falling miserably at bringing good stories to the audiences.
Apart from the licensed movies and shows list of JioCinema, the originals are not very intriguing. Movies like ‘Bloody Daddy’, ‘Blind’ and ‘Ishq-E-Nadaan’ have disappointed audiences for a long time. There have been a few watchable movies but not many. ‘Asur’ had become quite a sensation at a time but again shows like ‘Illegal’ and ‘Ranneeti’ have failed to create a hype that originals from other shows have managed to do.
It’s strange that while JioStudios is handling its affairs so beautifully, JioCinema cannot consistently come up with good ideas to impress the audiences. If it continues to go on like this, the platform will not be able to compete with the other OTT biggies in India only with help of foreign shows.
