Why Bollywood Is No Longer OTT’s First Choice?

For years, Bollywood films were seen as the biggest attraction for streaming platforms in India. That equation is now changing rapidly. According to a recent Ormax Media study, South Indian films made up nearly 60% of all theatrically successful titles acquired by OTT platforms in 2025, clearly showing where streamers are placing their bets.

This change is not only about box office numbers. Streaming companies are increasingly favouring South Indian content because viewers are more likely to finish these films and shows after starting them. In the OTT business, strong completion rates and long watch times matter more than opening weekend hype. Executives from platforms like JioStar and ZEE5 say South Indian stories are consistently driving deeper audience engagement across regions.

Another reason behind this change is reliability. Producers and industry experts believe South cinema currently offers a steadier pipeline of theatrical hits, lower acquisition costs and better post-pandemic audience retention than many Hindi films. At a time when several Bollywood releases struggle to create lasting impact, South Indian films are giving platforms more dependable returns.

The trend also reflects a larger audience shift. India’s next wave of OTT subscribers is expected to come from smaller cities and regional markets, where rooted storytelling often connects more strongly than heavily urban Hindi content. For streaming platforms, South cinema is no longer just regional entertainment. It has become a core business strategy.
