When JioHotstar announced its new subscription prices, one thing stood out. The Mobile tier did not get more expensive. It is still ₹79 per month, ₹149 per quarter, and ₹499 per year. This is certainly not because JioHotstar is kinder to mobile users.
At first, this looks like a win for budget users. But there is a catch.
Hollywood content has been removed from the Mobile tier. If users want access to international shows and movies, they now have to upgrade to Super or Premium. So while the price stayed the same, the content did not.
In simple terms, Mobile users are now paying the same money for less value.
This move makes sense from a business point of view. India is still a mobile-first market, and most viewers are very price sensitive. If JioHotstar had increased the Mobile price, it could have lost millions of users. Keeping the price low helps the platform protect its massive user base.
Instead of charging more, JioHotstar chose to change what the Mobile tier offers.
Hollywood content plays an important role in pushing people to upgrade. When users feel that something is missing, they are more likely to move to a higher plan. The Mobile tier stays affordable, but it also feels more limited.
This way, JioHotstar gets the best of both worlds. It keeps its large audience and encourages serious viewers to spend more.
So yes, the Mobile tier price did not increase. But the cost is being paid in content.
And for many users, that matters just as much as money.
