Will SonyLIV Take a Hit From WWE’s Departure?

For over two decades, SonyLIV has been the go-to platform for WWE fans in India. From television rights to the OTT journey, SonyLIV has been a consistent partner from the very beginning.

But now, things are changing. Netflix India is set to become the new home for WWE starting April 2025.

Will this affect SonyLIV?

The honest answer is no, at least not to a degree that would harm the platform.

SonyLIV has a robust portfolio of sports content. The biggest draw? The UEFA Champions League, which remains a prime attraction for Indian audiences. Additionally, it streams the Bundesliga and the Saudi Pro League, both of which have strong followings. Tennis also contributes significantly, as SonyLIV holds the rights to several major matches.

Moreover, a significant portion of WWE’s Indian audience relies on YouTube clips or piracy for content. This means SonyLIV isn’t losing a substantial chunk of viewership overnight.

Yes, the loss of WWE rights will have some impact, but not enough to cause major concern. In fact, it could even be an opportunity. With the freed-up resources, SonyLIV can invest in other content. If done strategically, this could prove to be a wise move.

SonyLIV has already produced series like Zindaginama and Manvat Murders, which showed potential to go mainstream. With additional funds, they can focus on better marketing, leading to stronger returns.
