With Court Involvement, Will OTT Regulation Come Sooner?

With Court Involvement, Will OTT Regulation Come Sooner?

Do you know the latest news? Madras High Court has sent a legal notice that asks the Central Government to intervene and regulate the OTT platforms.

The petitioner argued that OTT content is destroying the youth through violent and sexually explicit content and we are accountable for the upcoming future.

Let’s not dive into the moral implications of this PIL because it will only complicate the issue further. The regulation of OTT is in talks more than ever.

We recently informed our readers that TRAI is not interested in the censorship of OTT apps as their priorities are entirely different. However, the situation is not the same after the IC-814 issue.

GOI is already investigating Netflix India after the Tax issue and this move will ultimately affect the entire OTT industry.

The thing is, such PILs keep on happening. There have been several instances when people and organisations ran campaigns against OTT. But, the industry is struggling to make profits and the government looks uninterested in bringing anything that could further harm the industry.

We seriously feel that individual cases like IC-814 will keep getting harsh responses but the overall industry is safe as of now in terms of getting any censorship. Moreover, putting OTT under censorship is a tedious process for the government and why would they invest energy on something that affects only those people who use X?
