Analysis
Written and directed by Ben Affleck, Air is a 2023 American biographical sports drama film that is based on true events about the origin of Air Jordan, a basketball shoeline that sparks the collaboration between Nike and basketball legend Michael Jordan.
The film starts off with Matt Damon’s Sony Vaccaro who is tasked with bringing in a new spokesperson and star endorser for Nike’s basketball shoe line by Marketing VP Rob Strasser and co-founder and CEO Phil Knight so as to save the basketball line of Nike from the stiff competition from Adidas and Converse.
Vaccaro’s search ends at Michael Jordan, the number three as he believes Jordan had it in him to be a basketball legend for ages. However, budget constraints pull the superiors down because they found the player off their limits as he was also a fan of Adidas.
The film effectively intertwines Michael Jordan’s rise and the journey of Jordan x Nike association to Air Jordan, one of the most popular and iconic lines of the giant even today. The biggest role in the film is that of Vaccaro’s who is not only a fan of the sport but also a passionate visionary when it comes to the future of the sport and the shoe giant.
Vaccaro proposes immortalising the basketball find’s career and legacy in the form of an exclusive shoe line named after him, being convinced of his potential and talent. The film follows the long and tough road Vaccaro takes to even get Michael Jordan and the Jordan family for a meeting, let alone closing the deal.
Unarguably one of the strongest assets of the film is it’s starcast. A starcast so talented and so organic, staying true to the true story and it’s characters. Matt Damon shines in a role that’s probably one of the most rooted he’s ever done in a while. Viola Davis shines as Jordan’s stubborn, proud and efficient mother who calls the shots.
Ben Affleck’s writing is strong enough and does true justice to Jordan and his legacy even if the story is based on the origin of Air Jordan shoe line. He directs and writes a sports drama with full conviction, without an ounce of pouncy melodrama and cut straight from real life clothing with crisp editing.
In short, Air is definitely worth your time and undoes most of the tappings that come by sports films and biographical excerpts. Sneakerheads especially would love this one.
Other Artists?
Viola Davis is strong and carries Deloris Jordan’s heart as the most influential figure in Michael Jordan’s personal and professional life. Ben Affleck’s Phil Knight is also an interesting character alongside Jason Bateman‘s Rob Strasser and Chris Tucker‘s Howard White. In short, Air won half of it’s battle with a starcast this bomb.
Music and Other Departments?
Robert Richardson’s cinematography deserves indefinite praise. The entire colour grading made the 80s recreation look convincing to the T. The editing was crisp enough to handle a screenplay that did due justice to the story of one of the most iconic sports partnerships of all time without un-necessary melodrama. The background score was also great.
