What Is the Story About?
Babli (Tamannaah) is a small-town girl. Her father is Gajanan Tanwar (Saurabh Shukla), a coach who trains wrestlers locally. They then move to Delhi and take up jobs as bouncers.
How did Babli unexpectedly become a bouncer in Delhi? What did she achieve form Babli Bouncer’s story’s crux.
Performances?
Tamannaah doesn’t look the character she plays, age-wise, but makes up for it in spirit. She is in Cameraman Gangatho Rambabu zone playing a tomboy. Only here, she is from a small town instead of a city from the start.
The fun and emotional sequences are basic and don’t require heavy-duty acting. There is a lot of comedy, which is also done as required by the actress. It is lighter vein stuff mostly, and Tamannaah easily pulls it off.
Analysis
Madhur Bhandarkar directs Babli Bouncer. The film is a surprise coming from him as he is known for serious, hard-hitting dramas.
Babli Bouncer is a fun, routine commercial flick, unlike anything Madhur Bhandarkar has done in the past. If one keeps the content in mind and takes away the director’s baggage, at best, there is a passable affair here. But, it entirely depends on low the bar is set.
The film starts on what looks like a serious tone, but it soon shifts gears. The introduction of Babli and all her scenes with family and friends point us in a non-serious direction. Everything is utterly predictable, but it’s fun at some level.
The core conflict involving love is as predictable as it gets. It also includes class conflict, additionally. We know exactly where it is headed, and it goes that way without any tweaks whatsoever.
Predictability, therefore, is the biggest issue, along with routineness. And yet, there is this undercurrent lighter vein touch and innocence via the characters that one doesn’t mind too much. It makes us go through the proceedings with a few fast-forward moments in between.
The ending is contrived and cliche, but more than that, it feels cut short just before it seems to take off. It could have been executed better.
Overall, Babli Bouncer is a routine and predictable small town to city conflict drama with a different backdrop. It fails to give the right emotional highs, but it has a decent amount of fun and relatability to make for a passable one-time viewing, at worst. The option to fast-forward also helps, along with lowering the expectations.
Other Artists?
The supporting cast lacks depth in their roles, even though they are all good actors. We have the likes of Saurabh Shukla, Sahil Vaid, Supriya Shukla etc., in vital roles. They have done similar parts many times in the past, which makes them live the roles from the first scene. But, the narrative never really fully utilises their strengths to have an impact.
Music and Other Departments?
Tanishk Bagchi’s music is servecable. It goes with the flow, but nothing is memorable. Himman Dhamija’s cinematography is neat. There is a colourful vibe throughout that highlights the lighter and brighter movie’s tone. Manish Pradhan’s editing could have been better. The writing is par for the course lacking depth of any sort.
