What Is the Story About?
Netflix’s latest Indian original film ‘Chor Nikal Ke Bhaga’ centres on a con artist Ankit (Sunny Kaushal) and flight attendant Neha (Yami Gautam Dhar), who must pull off a mid-air heist of diamonds, to pay off a past debt. Their well-thought out plan goes haywire when terrorists hijack the plane and take it to Kullu. The story takes several turns before ending on a twisty climax.
Chor Nikal Ke Bhaga is written by Siraj Ahmed and Amar Kaushik, directed by Ajay Singh, and produced by Maddock Films.
Performances?
Yami Gautam Dhar renders a somewhat decent performance in Chor Nikal Ke Bhaga, but only just. Sunny Kaushal is miscast as an edgy businessman and diamond thief. Not once in the runtime does he depict the conviction of a man with enough guts and gumption to pull off a high-octane heist. The supporting cast is average. Sharad Kelkar is wasted in an inconsequential role, though he steals the scenes he’s in.
Analysis
Chor Nikal Ke Bhaga is touted as a hijack drama within a heist thriller within a romantic story. However, contrary to its genre-bending ambitions, the film doesn’t do justice to even one of the genres is sets out to be. The narrative comes across as a humdrum mish-mash of a story that seems to have been written in bits and pieces, and then hurriedly brought together into a disjointed whole.
The heist part of the film is so boring and long-drawn that one is compelled to frequently hit the fast-forward button in the course of it. The hijack drama is worse. It is dull, insipid, and lacks that urgent, edge-of-the-seat element to make it watch-worthy. Finally, the romance in the movie is bland as a damp squib, and not at all convincing.
To make matters worse, there’s zero chemistry between the lead actors. The entire thing looks contrived and fake enough to give a feeling that something’s off about the drama unfolding on screen. As a result, none of the twists in the tale makes any kind of impact whatsoever on the viewer. To add to it, both Yami Gautam and Sunny Kaushal look totally clueless throughout the narrative. Neither displays the range or nuances to make their characters persuasive or memorable enough.
Chor Nikal Ke Bhaga is the classic example of a plot that looks amazing on paper but falls flat upon execution. Unnecessary and ill-conceived songs, placed at too frequent intervals in the film, add to the viewer’s irritation with the storytelling.
To sum it up, Chor Nikal Ke Bhaga is a mediocre film, destined to be relegated to oblivion within a couple of weeks. Watch it only if you are a die-hard fan of heist movies or of Yami Gautam, or if you have nothing better to watch. Or else, give it a miss.
Music and Other Departments?
Rajiv Sodha’s background score is quite good, and lends much-needed momentum to the drab proceedings. Gianni Giannelli’s cinematography is average, nothing to write home about. Charu Takkar’s editing is adequate.
