What Is the Story About?
The series oscillates between the years 1992 and 2000. The 1992 part describes how Honey (Samantha) a failed actress in Mumbai joins Bunny (Varun Dhawan) in a secret organisation that is headed by Bunny’s foster father Guru (Kay Kay Menon).
In 2002, Honey was living a peaceful life with her super trained daughter Nadia (Kashvi Majumdar) but was attacked by Guru’s men. Interestingly, Bunny returns to save Honey and their daughter. Will he rebel against his foster father?
Performances?
The cast is the strongest aspect of Citadel: Honey Bunny. The chemistry of Varun Dhawan and Samantha is really impressive mainly due to the super strong performance of Samantha. She is as great as she was in The Family Man Season 2. Be it action or intensity, she is an absolute feast to the eyes.
Varun Dhawan is good but not someone who would stand out in front of Samantha as his dialogue delivery is nowhere close to the intensity which is required from the show.
Kay Kay Menon is perfect in his role, as anyone would assume. Sikander Kher and Saqib Saleem suffer from the problem of roles that are not given time. They are good in the assigned scenes but yet again, they don’t have many scenes.
Simran is strictly okay in her role as Zooni. She doesn’t have the intensity or intimidation required for the role. If someone stronger like Tabu had gotten this role then it would become far more impactful.
Analysis
Why do people love Raj and DK? He is known for making action thrillers that leave us on a cliffhanger. Interestingly, Raj and DK do that at the end of every episode and not just the sixth and last episode of this season.
We also need to keep in mind that Citadel as a global franchise is very weak. Priyanka Chopra’s American Citadel was highly disappointing.
The recently released Citadel: Diana is kinda passable but we need to acknowledge that Citadel: Honey Bunny is the least disappointing work in the entire franchise.
So how far have Raj and DK gone to provide us with a good thriller (we know that the Russo Brothers tied their hands)?
You see, you will have to let go of the logic. In the very first few minutes of the show, we see Nadia walking free from a large school without anyone noticing. The little girl is fearless by an extraordinary margin and it just feels so absurd.
Samantha too, walks with a hammer in her hands as if she doesn’t care who would see her.
But, the overall action and thrill are given well. The action choreography is fantastic and some scenes can make you blink. It is not very violent per se, but the style factor is top-notch.
The weakest aspect of the series is something that should have been the strongest; the script. The writing is not something appreciable and the sense of urgency looks fake most of the time.
Citadel: Honey Bunny is a very stylish show but don’t expect something like Farzi or The Family Man.
Music and Other Departments?
Music is not the strongest and most tempting reason you should watch Citadel: Honey Bunny. But, it is good. However, the trailer did a far better job at music than the actual series.
The most interesting aspect has to be editing and action choreography. They are just brilliant with one of the most glamorous action scenes you can imagine.
