Ginny Weds Sunny Review – A Humdrum Love Story, Devoid Of Magic

What Is the Story About?

Netflix‘s latest direct to digital release, Ginny Weds Sunny, is a romantic comedy, set in the backdrop of Delhi. It is written by Sumit Arora and Navjot Gulati, directed by Puneet Khanna, and produced by Vinod Bachchan. 

Ginny (Yami Gautam) is a confused millennial (aren’t they all!), who wants only a love marriage. What is life if you don’t fall in love is her mantra. Ginny doesn’t want to move on from her former boyfriend and now best friend, Nishant (Suhail Nayyar). Her matchmaker mother Shobha Juneja (Ayesha Raza Mishra) wants her to tie the knot, and lines up a parade of boys for her to choose from. Obviously, Ginny rejects them all. 

Sunny (Vikrant Massey) is a happy-go-lucky dude, whose only aim in life is to start his own tandoori restaurant. His father (Rajiv Gupta) has promised to fund his restaurant if Sunny gets married quickly. Getting hitched thus becomes his default aim in life. 

Shobha decides that simpleton Sunny is the perfect match for her headstrong daughter Ginny; and goes about orchestrating their love story.

Performances?

Vikrant Massey and Yami Gautam have put in earnest performances, carrying the movie on their shoulders. Yami is well-suited to the headstrong character she plays, and carries it off with ease. Vikrant Massey has spent a lifetime playing the average Joe, and can pull off the character of Sunny in his sleep. Ayesha Raza Mishra is as dependable as ever. Suhail Nayyar doesn’t quite cut it as Nishant. The rest of the cast is quite average. 

Analysis

Ginny Weds Sunny starts off well. The opening sequences of the movie are funny, especially the one where Ginny snubs a potential suitor. But from there onwards, it’s all downhill for the storyline. 

The love story between Ginny and Sunny seems as contrived as a baby made in a test tube. To top it off, there’s zero chemistry between the lead characters, Yami Gautam and Vikrant Massey, which is why we never have it within us to root for the couple. Not when they drift apart; and certainly not amidst the wedding fracas towards the end. 

The poorly engineered love story is only one of the issues with Ginny Weds Sunny. The humour in the movie is positively an eyesore. The punchlines never land, the gags are dead as a dodo, and the comebacks are about as witty as Mr Bean on overdrive. The poor writing lets down the already lackluster storyline. 

The characterisations in the movie are another problematic issue. On the one hand, Ginny is shown to have high standards, is intelligent and headstrong. So we fail to understand what she would see in a pompous dunce such as Nishant. It just doesn’t add up, especially when she keeps badgering him to marry her. Jeez, wouldn’t a girl like her have some taste and self respect?

To put things in perspective, Ginny Weds Sunny is a humdrum movie, riddled with mediocre writing, poorly-etched-out premise and unmemorable characters.

Music and Other Departments?

The music of Ginny Weds Sunny is hardly memorable. The songs leave you unimpressed, save for Badshah and Mika Singh’s Saawan Mein Lag Gayi Aag reprise. Nuthan Nagaraj’s cinematography is average, as is the production design by Ashwini Shrivastav.
