What Is the Story About?
Heads & Tales is about three individual girls Alivelu Manga, Anisha and Shruti, whose lives are intertwined by fate. It happens without their knowledge, though, as God has written the same fate, aka screenplay or them.
The three girls have problems with men in their lives. How they overcome the problem is the movie’s basic story.
Performances?
Technically there is no one female lead among the three girls. But, between them, Divya Sripada and Sri Vidya are better compared to Chandini Rao. When it comes to the individual stories, Chandini Rao has a better one, though.
Divya Sripada playing a constable easily shines among the three. It is a fresh yet straightforward part for a female lead in recent times. Everything feels natural with her act, even though it lacks depth. The dialogues too sit quickly and smoothly without any forced feeling.
Sri Vidya’s part starts off well, but it soon gets very typical and cinematic. It should have been the case with Divya’s role as well, but she takes a backseat at the right time. The movie’s biggest issue crops with the characterisation of Sri Vidya and the way she enacts it. More than the acting, the fault lies in the way it has been developed.
Chandini Rao has the most compelling part of the three, but she doesn’t have enough moments. Within a short time, she tries, but it doesn’t work. It is too short and is hijacked by a male character immediately.
Analysis
Heads & Tales is an urban drama created from the mind of Sandeep Raj, the man behind Colour Photo. Sai Krishna Enreddy directs the movie.
The basic premise of the film is intriguing. It deals with people having similar problems and how they overcome them, or their fate is balanced eventually. The set-up and the premise are exciting and creative, though. An interview with God and his reactions are well thought out and written. The way the whole conversation leads to the main story is brilliant.
We then head to the actual plot involving the three girls. Each of the girls belongs to a different setting but suffers commonly from male abuse of various kinds. If one threatens violence for money, another guy gives nightmares of throwing acid. Then there is Shruti dealing with sexual abuse and a fickle-minded boyfriend.
The issues picked are all serious and grave ones. However, they are all handled frivolously and non-seriously. There seems to be a fear in the mind of the director-writer team that if handled with seriousness, it could become slow and tedious. There are a few instances where the same is insinuated through dialogues.
The narrative is fast-paced, and the dialogues flow thick and fast, as intended, but ultimately lack any depth. For such serious stories, there is no emotional connection at all.
The overnight bonding between Manga and Anisha, the latter’s handling of Venkatesu, the change of heart of boyfriend, Venkatesu etc., happen so soon without any impact. The short length makes the matter worse.
Still, the effort in writing can be seen along with a unique idea. The ending message also gives a sense of positivity. If only there were some room to breathe in the narrative and the emotions appropriately rounded, things would have been much better.
Overall, Heads & Tales is a passable watch due to the writing and unique setup. It would have been better if the story had enough serious drama considering the theme and its balance with the fun.
Other Artists?
Apart from the three main female leads, it is Sunil who has a small supporting part. He plays the God and is fine. His segment brings the intriguing element, but it could have been used well. Arun Pulavarthy gets a couple of scenes to shine and is alright among the rest of the cast. Kiwish Kautilya could have been better, whereas Tharun is wasted. Suhas in a cameo easily grabs attention and stands out.
Music and Other Departments?
The background by Mani Sharma is decent. A few parts are excellent, but the rest feel ordinary. The cinematography is fine for a small film. The editing could have been better as the movie gives a rushed feeling throughout. The writing leaves a mark, but not in a good way for the theme at hand.
