What Is the Story About?
Humble Politiciann Nograj is a spin-off series on the character Nograj (Danish Sait) from the movie Humble Politician Nograj that came a few years ago. It is based on real-life political events related to the Assembly Elections in Karnataka in 2018.
How Nograj, with a sizeable MLA’s of his One Big Party, manages to become kingmaker of the political circus is what the series is all about.
Performances?
There is an inconsistency in the role, which is reflected in the performance and the role as well. It is clearly evident that the charm and freshness of the first time are not present in Danish Sait as Nograj. It is a more exaggerated and darker, in parts, version of the same character from the movie. At times, he does come across as a villain.
Analysis
Saad Khan, the man behind Humble Politician Nograj (the movie), is also the series director. As mentioned previously, it is a satire on the Karnataka state elections of 2018.
The beginning of the series introducing the world is slow but engaging. The names of parties are a start, but it goes all the way in terms of various characters and all. The way the real-life scenarios have been adapted and written does make one chuckle.
The problem starts once the narrative shifts to the resorts. There is so much repetitiveness. It feels as if the whole thing has come to a halt and what we see are sequences that feel like listening to a stuck record.
A lot of trimming is necessary for this large extended block that mainly covers the duration of the series. And mind you, it is a very lengthy one.
Although decent in parts like the rest, the Russian drug’s track feels way too extended beyond the necessary. After all the stretching, it is also quickly wrapped in a jiffy at the end.
The excitement is again seen towards the end when we move out of the resort politics. The Assembly portions are okay. The already established characters do their usual, which makes it alright.
Overall, Humble Politiciann Nograj has an interesting premise, particularly to those who follow politics. But, it overstays its welcome testing the patience. Still, it is a passable watch for some genuinely funny bits if one likes the genre.
Other Artists?
Prakash Belawadi is hilarious as KGB. The entire initial stretch is bearable for his antics alone. The sheer innocence with which he goes about the various issues will surely bring a laugh or two. Vijay Chendoor, who repeats his act as Monjunath, is acceptable. Geetanjali Kulkarni as Most Secular Party National Head is fine. She is good when there is something to chew upon. Tiku Talsania playing a spoof on the Prime Minister is hilarious without trying to be so. The rest of the cast is also apt for the respective roles. They all have a scene or two to shine. The extension resting only on the spoof and lack of meat undoes the efforts.
Music and Other Departments?
The overall production quality of the series is alright. It is like low budget concept films. The background score by Nakul Abhyankar is apt for the general intention of the series. The cinematography by Arkodeb Mukharjee is okay. It could have been better, though. The editing by Bharath MC should have been ruthless. There are a lot of rough edges in the final product. The writing is sharp in parts and is a significant reason for the interest in the first place.
