What Is the Story About?
Lindy (Kate Beckinsale) has a psychological disorder called Intermittent Explosive Disorder. She feels rage within her body whenever something terrible happens to or around her. After years of tests and trials finally, Lindy is given an electric strap to control her anger.
Lindy, thanks to the development, slowly tries to mingle with the people. She finds a perfect guy on her first date. Before things could go any further, Justin, the guy she begins to like, is shot dead. How Lindy finds the killer and avenges Justin’s death is the movie’s plot.
Performances?
It is a treat to watch Kate Beckinsale in action. The slight tweak given to the character to make it something different from the usual allows the actress to show other emotions. It makes the character rounded and helps in making it engaging to the audience. Otherwise, it would be a one-dimensional part. Kate Beckinsale is Jolt’s main and sole draw, and she does all to make it worthwhile.
Analysis
Tanya Wexier directs Jolt. It follows the female-led action spectacle genre. The premise offers a unique hook for the character, and the ‘action’ block to take place, and that’s it.
The opening feels a bit stretched, but the voice-over adds a touch of deadpan fun to it. Things are bearable due to it. After the establishment of the character and its condition, we immediately jump into the plot.
The first meeting of the lead pair is a treat to watch even though nothing extraordinary happens. It is the writing and the performances that are the key. The romance continues further, but we know that something sinister might be in the store in the back of our minds.
Jolt takes off when Linda gets the jolt of her life with the murder of Justin. The investigation and action go hand in hand. The former provides fun, courtesy of the banter, whereas the latter is set up for some kick-ass action. Jolt delivers on both counts.
Everything will feel fine as long as one buys the basic premise. It is over the top, and the action and conversation too is written around it. Jolt is a mindless action entertainer, and if that is firmly placed in one’s mind, it manages to entertain.
If one continues, there is a twist in the tale at the end. However, at that point, it doesn’t seem much. It is too much despite keeping in mind the over the top narrative. It also dilutes the impact a bit due to the farfetched nature.
Overall, Jolt is a mindless, fun action outing the likes we usually see with male protagonists. It delivers what it promises if the expectations are set correctly.
Other Artists?
Apart from Kate Beckinsale, four more artists have prominent roles. They are Jai Courtney, Bobby Cannavale, Stanley Tucci and Laverne Cox. Everyone gets a well-defined character and sequences to make their parts essential for the plot movement. They all do justice to their roles which doesn’t require any heavy-duty action.Music and Other Departments?
