What Is the Story About?
Following Kuchh Kuchh Hota Hai, Karan Johar brought Miss Braganza (Archana Puran Singh) amidst a new set of younger generation. It is Pia Jaisingh from the family of lawyers (of course Jaisingh, whose reference was also in Call Me Bae). She is in a college where the most wanted boy is from a middle-class background. Pia hires that boy as her boyfriend but a misunderstanding causes the secret to be revealed.
Later, the two try to fight the problems and be together again.
Performances?
Well, Khushi Kapoor’s debut was in The Archies. She was disastrous in that but when the trailer came and we heard that dialogue saying
“Tum mere saath flirt kar rahe ho Mr Mehta”
We were ready for a total washout. Well, she didn’t disappoint. The thing is, Ibrahim Ali Khan was also a total match for her. He ensured that he wouldn’t be one degree better than his co-star.
The older actors include Dia Mirza, Jugal Hansraj, Sunil Shetty, and Mahima Chaudhary. They have very little screen time and there is nothing to take away from them
Analysis
Let’s talk about the best reason you should be watching Nadaniyaan. Well, the film is so bad that it gives you a lot of scope to make memes. If that is one of the reasons you can watch a movie, then my friend, do not miss Nadaaniyan.
Karan Johar is a veteran filmmaker now (yeah, wake up), and time and again he has proved to the world why he is one of the most successful filmmakers ever in Hindi cinema. But he has taken the responsibility to launch so many starkids that he himself is fed up. This Karan Johar Employment Scheme has not only harmed his image as a commercial filmmaker but also hit him disastrously.
A movie like Nadaaniyan shouldn’t exist in the first place but now that it does, let’s talk about it.
If you are/have been a college student or someone you know is in college, then this movie becomes relevant to you. This movie spits on every hard work college students do to reach college, pass the college, and make a career out of it. This is the peak of what elitism looks like on college campuses. It has nothing to say about the lives of college students and this is just another addition to the Student of the Year universe.
The film has tried everything to hide its shallowness. We get references from classic Karan Johar films and of course there is a cameo by Orry.
There is a lesson on patriarchy but it comes out to be very funny. How?
Dia Mirza (mother of Ibrahim Ali Khan’s character) is so progressive that she wants her son to bear the tantrums of the girl’s father. But she is middle class. The girl’s father is a typical patriarch who is very influential but can’t afford a gender studies class.
But it is nothing except an ultra-failure attempt to launch Ibrahim Ali Khan. The boy needs hardcore training to be in front of the camera. He definitely does not deserve it at this point but that’s how Nepotism operates. Netflix India should also keep an eye on what they are giving space to because it is hard to understand how they could be comfortable greenlighting this movie.
Music and Other Departments?
Actually, nothing works in the film other than things that “should not” work. We are doubtful whether the director has even visited any college campus in India. Because it is an ultra-polished, ultra-perfect campus with everything sanitised.
So the sets come out to be eye candy even when nobody wanted it to be that way. The music is highly forgettable and there is nothing really nice to talk about. If and only if Bollywood could produce something like the album of Kuchh Kuchh Hota Hai then that would be nice.
