Doctor Sleep is an English horror movie based on author Stephen King’s novel of the same name. It is the sequel to King’s 1977 novel, The Shining, and was published in 2013.
The sequel picks up from the events of the preceding story. Danny Torrance (Ewan McGregor) is gifted with psychic abilities. In the first part, when Danny was a kid, the ghosts from the haunted Overlook Hotel had pursued him to Florida, where he had shifted with his mother to flee from the haunted Hotel. The ghosts fed off the ‘Shining’, another name for the psychic abilities possessed by innocent children, to increase their life spans. After the events of his childhood, the grown up Danny suffers from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. He has also turned into an alcoholic to suppress his psychic powers. When he hits rock bottom, he decides to mend his ways. He joins AA, and works at a hospice, where he uses his psychic powers to help dying patients find peace, which earns him the nickname of Doctor Sleep.
Meanwhile Abra Stone (Kyliegh Curran), a young girl with an even more powerful shining than him, contacts Danny through telepathy to help her fight back True Knot, a cult of psychic vampires that tortures and kills youngsters with psychic powers and feeds on the steam that is released. Rose (Rebecca Ferguson), a powerful psychic vampire, is the leader of the cult. Danny helps Abra escape the cult, but loses his own life in the process.
