The Case of Itaewon Homicide

Remember Zodiac? A serial killer who never came to be punished? Sometimes you can build a theory against an accused so precise that it matches the murder, but if there is no evidence, you don’t have a chance to win.The 2009 Korean film, The Case Of Itaewon Homicide, is one such movie that focuses on a case that took place in 1997 and still haunts the minds of Koreans who remember it. The movie revolves around Jo Joong-pil’s murder in a bathroom of a public restaurant. A smart and straight student, Jo Joong-pil was just at the wrong place at the wrong time – a group of Korean-American friends were sitting in the same restaurant when one of them, Robert Pearson, showed them all a switchblade. AJ,Pearson’s friend, seemed to take a particular interest in the knife, talking about stabbing and killing. Thinking of it as a joke, all their other friends go out for a smoke, but AJ and Pearson go into the bathroom where Joong-pil was killed. As the investigation begins with Pearson as the prime suspect, things get complicated when he says AJ killed the victim. With both of them pointing fingers at each other and lack of substantial evidence, the question remains to be who really committed the murder, because one of them definitely did it.
