Sitara: Let Girls Dream is a silent short film from Pakistan, set in the backdrop of the seventies. 14-year-old Pakistani girl Pari dreams to be a pilot, sharing her dreams with her mother and younger sister. But unbeknownst to her, her father plans to marry her off at that tender age to a much older man, putting paid to her dreams. The 15-minute-long film conveys how important it is to allow young girls to dream and to follow that dream. The entire film is in the animated form, lending even more poignancy to the story. The story is told from the point of view of Pari’s six-year-old sister Mehr, who still doesn’t understand the culture that subverts girls and their dreams. It is another touching offering from two-time Oscar-winning and three-time Emmy-winning director, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy.
