Vijay Sethupathi’s movie ‘Maharaja’ is going to have a wide theatrical release in China now. It will be coming out on the 29th of November and there will be almost forty thousand screens for the movie.
This is indeed huge for a regional industry and is quite unprecedented too. A Tamil movie having forty thousand screens in China is not something to be ignored. Previously we have seen Bollywood movies working out really well in the country. Particularly, Aamir Khan’s movies have a spectacular response in audiences there.
This marks the start of a new era in which movies from regional industries too will have a giant opportunity in the International market. What RRR did was extraordinary but it had wonderful campaigning and marketing all over the world. And ‘Maharaja’ did not have that, yet if it manages to make a huge number at the box office, it will be a one of a kind success.
We saw Salman Khan’s ‘Tubelight’ not working out very well in China despite having people like Jackie Chan. ‘Laal Singh Chaddha’ did nor have the expected response too. If Maharaja pulls it off with the Chinese box office, it will open new possibilities for regional cinema in India. Also it will represent the wonderful thrillers from India out there.
