Prime Video’s New Tamil Thriller Revived After BO Bomb

Thandakaaranyam, the V. R. Dinesh-starrer Tamil action thriller, is now available to stream on Prime Video. Following a mediocre theatrical response, this Athiyan Athirai-directed flick had a decent buzz on social media before its OTT premiere, and viewers have reacted positively to it.

Viewers have praised the movie’s engaging and gripping screenplay, along with the outstanding work from the cast, especially the leading man. Another performer winning hearts is Kalaiyarasan, with his incredible portrayal of Murugan.

The script and direction are being highly lauded in particular, with the screenplay recognised as one of the best in Tamil cinema this year.

People on OTT are hailing Thandakaaranyam as a genuine, action-packed drama with mass appeal, stunning visuals (especially the forest landscapes by Pratheep Kaliraja), and powerful, immersive music (by Justin Prabhakaran). The rest of the cast has been praised as well.

Many viewers have commended director Adhiyan Adhirai and Neelam Productions (Pa. Ranjith) for tackling a real story about the Naxal surrender scam involving poor tribal people, emphasising its importance for society.

However, some have criticised the excessive use of violence and melodrama to spice things up. Still, the overall film appears to be a big win with audiences.

Overall, the film is a dense, engaging and emotionally heavy action thriller that successfully tackles systemic oppression against Adivasi communities.

Thandakaaranyam, based on a real incident in Jharkhand, juxtaposes the dreams and helplessness of its characters against a gruesome reality. The plot is layered, examining themes of a neta-sponsored trap, Naxal identity, forest politics, and greed, centred around two brothers: Sadaiyan (Dinesh), who believes in fighting, and Murugan (Kalaiyarasan), who tries to abide by the system by joining a paramilitary force (ISGS).
