‘Thangalaan’: One That’s Marred By Misfortunes

Vikram’s ‘Thangalaan’ is finally streaming on Netflix after overcoming a string of delays and challenges. But this isn’t the first time the film had problems in a release, even it’s theatrical release was delayed multiple times before finally coming to big screens on 15th August. Even then the Hindi version did not release simultaneously and made its way to the cinemas on 6th September.

Inspired from true events, ‘Thangalaan’ is a period drama that revolves around the lives of mine workers in the Kolar Gold Fields, Karnataka. The film marks first such collaboration between actor Vikram and director Pa Ranjith.

In addition to Vikram, ‘Thangalaan’ also stars Parvathy Thiruvothu, Malavika Mohanan, Pasupathi, Harikrishnan Anbudurai, Preeti Karan and Muthukumar among others.

As for the digital debut, it was long known that ‘Thangalaan’ streaming rights are with Netflix but reportedly due to issues over agreement it was delayed. After long and extended round of negotiations, the makers and streaming platform have finally reached to a solution and the film has quietly made its way to Netflix. Yet again, the Hindi version isn’t available yet and viewers can only stream it in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam with English subtitles.

It’s definitely a happy news for fans, but it’s also sad to see a good film like ‘Thangalaan’ having to go through such misfortunes. The film did receive critical acclaim but could not manage to become a box office success and underperformed commercially.

And while most South Indian films make their way to OTT four weeks after their theatrical run, ‘Thangalaan’ could not due to the issue mentioned above. Now that most of the hype for the film has died down it finally got its digital debut and that too without any notification by the platform.

Hopefully, ‘Thangalaan’ will find redemption on OTT and finally get the recognition it deserves as it reaches to a wider national and global audience through Netflix. It will be a great exposure for the film as more and more viewers will get to immerse themselves in the world of ‘Thangalaan’ and appreciate the work that went into its making.
