Akhanda 2 Gets OTT Release After Box Office Bloodbath

The wait is finally over for Nandamuri Balakrishna’s fans, as his high-octane fantasy action thriller, Akhanda 2: Thaandavam, has secured its official streaming date.

Netflix has confirmed that the sequel will premiere on January 9, 2026. The film will be available in all major Indian languages, including Telugu, Hindi, Tamil, Kannada, and Malayalam, bringing the power of the Aghora to a global audience.

The road to OTT was nearly as dramatic as the film’s climax. For days, rumours of a postponement swirled after Netflix added the title to its “Coming Soon” catalogue, only to delete it shortly after.

This led to intense speculation among trade analysts and fans alike, especially given the film’s complex journey to the big screen, which included a last-minute legal battle in the Madras High Court that delayed its theatrical debut.

However, the streaming giant put all doubts to rest today by re-listing the film and making the official announcement.

Helmed by Boyapati Sreenu, Akhanda 2: Thaandavam hit theatres on December 12, 2025. While the film carried massive expectations following the 2021 cult classic Akhanda, its theatrical performance was a tale of two halves.

The movie had a thunderous start, collecting over INR 22 crore net on its opening day and eventually crossing the INR 100 crore mark globally. However, it faced a sharp 66% drop in its third week.

Critics were divided, with some praising the visual scale and Balakrishna’s dual-role performance, while others criticised the loud execution, over-the-top action sequences, and thin plot.

Despite failing to replicate the runaway commercial success of its predecessor, the film found a loyal audience among mass-cinema enthusiasts who appreciated its focus on Sanatana Dharma and high-voltage action.

The sequel elevates the stakes from a local struggle to a national crisis. The story follows Akhanda Rudra Sikandar Aghora as he re-emerges to protect the nation from a biological warfare threat targeting the Maha Kumbh Mela. We also see Balakrishna playing Murali Krishna. Alongside the leading man, we witness talents such as Aadhi Pinisetty, Samyukta Menon, Harshaali Malhotra, and more.

As Akhanda 2 prepares for its digital Thaandavam, all eyes are on whether the OTT audience will give this mass entertainer the second life it needs to reach the status of its predecessor. Stay tuned for more updates.
