A change of name is a common thing in the entertainment industry. Back to the Future was almost titled Man from Pluto, and Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction was nearly called Black Mask. Clearly, names play an important role in marketing films.
But the Tamil film Black caused a strange phenomenon.
After its release on Prime Video, the makers started working on the Telugu dub. However, when it finally premiered, KG Balasubramani’s Black had a new title—it was now called Dark.
But why?
If the intention was to localize the title for a regional audience, it would have made sense. But Black and Dark are both English words, so what’s the point?
The 2024 film gained traction, especially since last year was all about horror films. Black received love from fans, even during its OTT release.
Starring Priya Bhavani Shankar and Jiiva in the lead roles, the film also features Yog Japee, Swayam Siddha, and Vivek Prasanna in supporting roles.
Now, was this name change—essentially a rebranding—done to make it feel like a “brand-new film”? That could be the case, but we are yet to see the results of this decision.
