Game Changer OTT Deal: Undervalued?

Game Changer OTT Deal: Undervalued?

Everyone is talking about how it seems undervalued. Come on, it’s a big-budget film with an A-list star like Ram Charan and director Shankar attached to it-all this hype. But it isn’t quite right when Amazon Prime picks up the OTT rights for a mere ₹50 crore-raising eyebrows, right? Especially when other films like Kalki 288 AD and Pushpa 2 are fetching way more. ₹50 crore seems rather small for a film of this stature, right? Of course, especially when reportedly the film’s production cost is set at ₹300 crore.

Various opinions floating around on social media put forward several theories. Maybe, a longer time frame for production should get the blame. It’s been onboard for nearly three years, and, maybe, the initial excitement wore out. Another factor is that of Shankar-his last film, Indian 2, did nothing to stoke the box office flames. Maybe Amazon had these things in mind while negotiating the price? Though ₹50 crore is not exactly chump change, in comparison to the ₹275 crore that Netflix gave out for Pushpa 2, this looks like a deal.

But let’s not forget about timing: The film was set for a Sankranti release in January 2025, which is always the prime time for Telugu films. That festive window might give a major boost to the theatrical numbers, with the makers possibly counting on that instead of the OTT deal. This release timing, though, is smack right into the middle of the holiday season, the exact timing that pushes a film to hit the silver screen; however, it also means streaming via Amazon First in February 2025, which could somewhat dampen the excitement, especially when audiences might feel they could afford to wait a month.

Ram Charan is a well-known name in the circuit of super-hits, and he is playing a double role in Game Changer. S.J. Suryah as the antagonist is quite some attraction. Everything right is there, but that really what we cannot tell how what is supposedly brewing within has shaped its fate. Possibly OTT platforms are clad, or perhaps the makers are not much bothered about the OTT. Nonetheless, the speculation surrounds the deal as if it were an opportunity missed.

All eyes will be on the performance of Game Changer, though, from theatres to streaming. Dil Raju seems assured, and with Shankar steering this political action drama, expectations are high. While some of us might aver that we would look back and consider this OTT deal as block two of a grand strategy, others would still scratch their heads saying why it did not ask for something more.
