Swag’s Quick OTT Move?

Swag, directed by Hasith Goli is the new Telugu film to hit the OTT just three weeks after its theatrical run on October 4, 2024. Usually, it will take four weeks for any Telugu film after its theatrical run for OTT release, but whenever the film performs dreadfully, the count is set rolling. Swag is the latest to face such an early release.

The film revolves around Bhavabhuti, a police officer who learns he is the sole legitimate heir to a substantial Swaganika Dynasty inheritance. In addition to one of his lookalikes, he discovers three more legitimate heirs in the house, which heightens the chaos and absurd suffering in the movie.

What may be the purpose for such an early OTT release? Swag’s poor box performance was the primary reason for moving it directly to OTT. The audience strongly criticized the attempt to mix the comedy and drama, citing a largely predictable plot, a disorganized writing style, and a weak characterization. As a result, the story was fragmented and did not captivate the audience.

Swag is a comedy-drama, which is a popular genre. Finding a balance between comedy and drama, however, becomes difficult. The way Swag handled this transaction was inappropriate. The entire humour felt drawn out, and the story’s drama fell short of expectations. Many other films of the comedy-drama genre have established standards that Swag couldn’t match.

This shift to OTT is Swag’s second opportunity to succeed. Additionally, it would make it possible to reach more people with different preferences, including individuals who would not have seen the movie during its initial run. This would be extremely helpful for movies like Swag.

On OTT, viewers can pause and rewatch the movie at their own convenience. Perhaps elements of the film that were overlooked in a theatre setting would now become clear. Movies with subtitles have a wider audience because they can now accommodate more people.

Although it’s an eager attempt to switch to OTT before fans stop watching, this could still be a smart move to increase the movie’s audience. Swag might yet find a more receptive audience online, this is a classic example of too little, too late.
