Nithiin’s Thammudu is now available to stream on Netflix (from August 1). This masala action entertainer flopped badly in theatres, which didn’t reflect well against its reported ₹75 crore budget. Both audience and critical reception toward this Nithiin-starrer were mostly brutal, and it seems like the OTT audience is sharing the same sentiment about the film.
Thammudu revolves around a devoted brother who stops at nothing to protect his sister from the many challenges she faces. The story explores the deep bond between siblings and how they navigate misunderstandings to preserve their relationship.
Early OTT reactions to Thammudu are highly negative. Viewers have pointed out the movie’s cliché writing, incoherent storytelling, and poorly developed characters. Attempts at emotional depth, especially the sibling bond, feel forced and unconvincing.
Despite showing some potential and featuring a few decent performances, the film fails to deliver on nearly every front. Many have called it overstuffed, outdated, and occasionally cringe-worthy, with action scenes that feel both excessive and dull. The only redeeming element, according to some, is the background score, thanks to B. Ajaneesh Loknath.
Moreover, it has a pathetic score of 4.6 out of 10 on IMDb.
Thammudu is another major disappointment for Nithiin, especially at a time when his career is at an all-time low. His last box office success was Bheeshma, and that came out in 2020. It’s been nearly five long years since Nithiin delivered a commercially successful film.
That said, OTT platforms are sometimes known to give new life to movies that don’t perform well in theatres. With its Netflix release, Thammudu could still gain some traction. Let’s see what happens. Stay tuned for more updates.
