Movie franchises in the Indian film industry are not a novel approach now. Most of them become humongous successes, either in commercial or critical terms. But what are its criteria for doing something distinctive? Or rather something that can get more rampant? The Tamil film industry has an answer at its best.
The Lokesh Cinematic Universe (LCU), also known as the Lokiverse, is an Indian media franchise and shared universe of Tamil-language action thriller films created by Lokesh Kanagaraj who is the most celebrated writer, producer, and director. It is currently the highest-grossing Tamil film franchise.
As its premise suggests, the universe follows an elaborate conflict between law enforcement officers and vigilantes in South India who are at war against dangerous drug cartels led by powerful crime lords. How is it becoming noteworthy?
Followed by the latest official news of a short film with a view of conceiving it as a prelude to the cinematic universe by the crew, such a franchise could be able to propagate and establish a better depth in the narrative. But is this the only merit of such a project?
Subsequently, the 10-minute short film will have references from the installments in the franchise like ‘Kaithi’, ‘Vikram’, and ‘Leo’ that can ensure watchable prospects for its upcoming sequels thereby becoming a profound achievement at the box office.
Furthermore, the short film’s collaboration with LevelUp Filmmaking, an online learning community platform along with Cinema Payyan, a film enthusiast production group, together can bring a lot of aspiring filmmakers and technicians providing their creative inputs to such a magnanimous universe.
As an important note, the update in the fifth year of ‘Kaithi’ was put by the director and its crew that gave a hint for its second part which will be coming soon, and is much expected by the critics as well as fans of ‘L.C.U’.
Moreover, the Universe also tries to bring other standalone flicks to the franchise named ‘Benz’ and a standalone movie for ‘Rolex’, which will be played by actor Suriya.
The short film is named ‘Pillaiyar Suzhi – Chapter Zero’ and is mainly expected to feature actors Narain, Arjun Das, Kalidas Jayaram, and Harish Uthaman playing important roles. Director’s G-Squad productions will be bankrolling the effort and Anirudh will be composing the background scores.
Again, the caption ‘one shot’ is expected to reference the movie ‘Vikram’, ‘two stories’ referencing ‘Leo’, and ‘twenty-four hours’ referencing ‘Kaithi’ respectively.
