Earlier this year, Laapta Ladies was released which takes about women empowerment in the rural parts of India. A film similar to the theme the former talks of, is being released on 18th October. Set in a period when women’s education has not been an important aspect of society, Ayushmati Geeta talks of a girl whose father prioritises her education over everything. The film delves into subjects that showcases the problems beared by women, struggles they had to face, and discrimination that happened with them through a gripping plot.
The film is supposedly adapted from true events. The plot is a fairly simple one. It revolves around a man from a village 200km away from Banaras. In the time when people didn’t focus on girl’s education, the man prioritises his daughter- Geeta’s studies and ensures education is an integral part of her life. Later, when they look for the girl’s marriage, they get a suitable groom for her.
Conflict arises when the father calls off the girl’s marriage when he gets to know she had failed her matric exams. He announces that his daughter won’t be married until she passes her matric exams. What follows is Geeta’s struggle in keeping up with her studies while standing up to the society’s expectations on her. The film also brings into angle her romantic relationship where his fiance, Kundan is an ideal and understanding person, different from the typical males of the time.
The film shows the difference in Geeta’s life and that of the typical females of the film. How education makes her stand up in the society dominated by males. She is able to even subdue the discrimination she faces. Hence, the film epitomises through Geeta the power of education and how upliftment of women can impact their lives significantly.
The film somehow reminds us of the themes Laapta Ladies dwelt as well. Hence expectations can be high from it. If people show it good support it can prove to be a really good film of the year. Also, all will depend on how the film will be executed by the makers. If not well executed, the film will destroy the message it stands for. Without known faces and good marketing, the film will expect less hype, but if judged by the quality, it deals through a very sensible topic to look forward to.
