It has become a trend that whenever a movie achieves a new milestone, other films try to follow the same path. This has been happening for quite a few years. The success of “Ghajini”, a South Indian remake, opened the door for more remakes, a trend that lasted for many years. Then, we saw a surge in 3D movies, with many films adopting the format.
Similarly, when a superhit movie emerges, it’s often followed by 3-4 other projects of the same genre. For instance, when Ayushmann Khurrana began doing social comedies, other actors jumped on the same bandwagon. After “Baahubali”, many epic sagas followed. “KGF” paved the way for dark, gritty films like “Kabzaa” and “Salaar”. Now, with “Stree 2”, a mid-budget horror-comedy, becoming one of the highest-grossing films in Hindi cinema, filmmakers are taking it as a sign that the audience wants to see more horror comedies. As a result, several similar films are now in the making.
Dinesh Vijan is already working on “Vampires of Vijaynagar” with Ayushmann Khurrana in the lead, which will be part of the “Stree” universe. Another film in production is “Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3”, which has locked in its release date for November 1. Despite delays and competition, it has stuck to its original date, indicating the makers’ confidence in the project. The success of “Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2”, a surprise hit, has also fueled their optimism. Another factor boosting their confidence is the addition of Vidya Balan to the cast.
Akshay Kumar, who played a small yet significant role in “Stree 2”, is also set to star in his own horror comedy, directed by Priyadarshan and featuring the original team behind “Bhool Bhulaiyaa”.
What are your thoughts on this growing trend of horror comedies?
