‘Devara’ has beaten Francis Ford Coppola’s ambitious ‘Megalopolis’ in the opening earnings. This is quite hilarious because ‘Megalopolis’ comes from a living legend, the director of ‘Godfather’ himself and having such a weak opening at the box office does not make any sense at all.
The movie also gathered a D+ grade from Cinemascore and ended up in sixth place in the weekend earnings. ‘Megalopolis’ managed to gather around 4 Million US Dollars this weekend, while ‘The Wild Robot’ reigns in the top place with 35 Million. ‘Devara’, the much anticipated Telugu film starring NTR Jr. and Saif Ali Khan in leading roles, is in fourth place and has gathered around 5 Million Dollars as of the weekend.
Critics have been having a difference of opinion about ‘Megalopolis’ since the Cannes screening of the movie and some thought it was too pretentious and out of its time. While others said that this is the pinnacle of artistic expression and that the movie will change the course of cinema history. Well, sadly, there have been too many controversies about ‘Megalopolis’ but it still does not show any promise at the box office. It might get better with time, as some fans are hoping. Only in a few days we will get to know whether Megalopolis will be rewarded by audiences and be counted in the masterful legacy of Coppola.
