It hasn’t quite been the best time for fans of cinema, much less fans of Bollywood, considering the meagre theatrical releases recently. And so this saga continues, well into the month of October, wherein the only buzzed titles streaming Hindi will be the Alia Bhatt starrer ‘Jigra’, as well as the Rajkumar Rao and Tripti Dimri led ‘Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video’.
Slated to release on the same weekend, the latter might just not manage to stay afloat. The reason? The audience has proved time and time again, but most recently with the roaring success of ‘Stree 2’, that they prefer to witness original scripts unfold in cinemas. If they have the option of witnessing that with ‘Jigra’, why would they choose to go for ‘Vicky Vidya’?
The latter follows the chaos that ensues when a VHS tape containing an intimate video of Vicky and Vidya in the 90s in a small town goes missing. This is, if not word to word, a very similar plotline as compared to 2014 American film ‘Sex Tape’, starring Cameron Diaz and Jason Segel.
The film is available to stream on Netflix as well. Which is to say, is the success of ‘Stree 2’ and the frivolous re-release of ‘Laila Majnu’, the only thing that’ll keep ‘Vicky Vidya’ going? That seems to be the unfortunate case with Tripti Dimri, considering that her most recent comedy title ‘Bad Newz’, while performed well at the box-office, failed to impress viewers due to its stale comedic antics.
