It is about time new and upcoming directors were given equal importance at film festivals!
The 55th International Film Festival of India (IFFI), scheduled to be held in Goa between November 20 and 28, will introduce a new award category: Best Debut Director of Indian feature film. This year’s lineup includes five remarkable debut films celebrating India’s rich cultural and linguistic diversity.
Out of the 117 eligible films, the shortlisted ones are- Boong (Manipur), Gharat Ganpati (Marathi), Mikka Bannada Hakki — Bird of a Different Feather (Kannada), Razakar–Silent Genocide of Hyderabad (Telugu) and Thanupp-The Cold (Malayalam).
These selections will showcase the creative vision and distinctive storytelling styles of emerging filmmakers. IFFI will be a platform for young talent, where the work of new directors who bring fresh perspectives and narratives to Indian cinema will be in the spotlight.
This marks a significant step in celebrating the creativity and promise of first-time directors, acknowledging their role in shaping the future of Indian cinema. By shining a light on these emerging talents, this can nurture the next generation of cinematic storytellers.
Amongst all the big-budget films, small debut filmmakers can get lost and IFFI can be the boost they need to showcase their art to a bigger audience. This is a positive step towards the improvement of India’s cinema landscape.
