While having a movie like ‘Laapata Ladies’ being selected for India’s official submission for Oscars is some great news for gender sensitization in Indian cinema, there is something very concerning there too.
Gender equality has become a prominent subject in cinema today but there is still a long way to go now. The list of members for the committee selecting the movie for Oscars from India has been released and it us shocking that there are Zero female members. While it is good that the panel has prestigious veterans like Jahnu Barua and it has selected a film that has a strong social message and also a producer that can back the Oscar campaignings for the film.
There is still a need for equality in workspace particularly in the film industries. The Hema Committee report has challenged many conventional ideas of comfort in the industry and following this, the Bengali industry has taken the same path and a similar committee has been formed. But there is still a huge gap between the genders and the new panel member lost has put a stamp on it.
For now we can do nothing about it, but the landscape has to change and the change has surely began. From Anasuya and Payal Kapadia winning in the Cannes Film Festival to a woman centric film going to the Oscars as the official submission from India, these feats will indeed pave the way for a more equal workspace in the film industries.
