There is some serious craziness out there. Tumbbad 2 which we all got excited for is perhaps not the REAL Tumbbad 2. The original idea was that of Pahadpangira.
Let’s tell you this in baby language.
There are so many examples of films where the first part of the film was directed by another person and the subsequent part by another. Take the case of YRF’s Tiger franchise. All the films have a different director.
This is because the owner of the film is the producer. The director may come out with ideas, and screenplay and dedicate their blood and sweat. But since the producer pays money, the film belongs to them.
In the case of the Tiger franchise, Aditya Chopra is the big daddy of the film. Thus he chose Kabir Khan for the first part, Ali Abbas Zafar for the second and Maneesh Sharma for the third.
Similarly, the producer of Tumbbad is NOT Rahi Anil Barve. It is Sohum Shah, Anand L Rai, Anand Gandhi and others.
And the film belongs to them.
But, think about it. Rahi Anil Barve came up with the idea of Tumbbad. For decades his madness made the film possible and we all know how great of a film it came out to be.
But there is a fallout.
The producers of the film announced Tumbbad 2 during the re-release and we all got excited for it. We somehow assumed that Rahi Anil Barve would obviously be leading it. If not him then who?
But, he had other plans. Perhaps that’s the reason he is totally away from the media when Tumbbad is running riot at the box office. We even raised this question and Barve also responded without making a direct reply.
So, Barve will be coming up with Pahadpangira and Pakshitirtha as the sequels of Tumbbad. He calls the first as revolving around the theme of the dawn of feminism.
The director will start these projects in March next year after finishing Gulkanda Tales and Raktbramhand.
So what’s happening over here?
People will have two options and they can choose both.
Tumbbad 2 will be the official sequel as it is coming from the producers.
But Pahadpangira will be the real sequel as it is the decades-long idea of Barve. It will be coming from the genius of a man who gave us Tumbbad.
We really hope that both the films come out to be great but it is sad to see Tumbbad getting fragmented. The two should have worked together.
All the best to Sohum Shah and especially Rahi Anil Barve.
