One of the most anticipated days for movie enthusiasts, National Cinema Day, is back for the third time. This year, it’s on September 20th. A day dedicated to celebrating the glory of cinema, all movies in theaters are sold for just ₹99. As the day has arrived, all eyes are on the theaters.
Post-pandemic, the number of moviegoers in theaters experienced a significant decline. The impact of COVID-19 and high ticket prices pushed audiences away from the big screen. OTT platforms became a viable alternative to cinema.
To bring back the lost audience, the Multiplex Association of India introduced National Cinema Day, where every movie ticket is sold at the same price regardless of seat preferences across the country. The plan proved successful, helping films like “Brahmastra” and “Jawan” achieve new heights at the box office.
This year, “Stree” is expected to continue its impressive run, while eyes are also on “Tumbbad” which is enjoying a successful second innings. Sidharth Chaturvedi and Raghav Juyal’s “Yudhra” could also be a surprise hit.
Regardless of which film performs the best, National Cinema Day is a win-win for the cinema industry. It demonstrates that audiences haven’t completely abandoned theaters. High ticket prices in multiplexes are the primary deterrent for many.
