Friday, 11 October 2024 saw the release of three big films in India. One of them, Martin, is a Kannada movie, which has also been released in Hindi dub. The other two are Bollywood films, one being Alia Bhatt starrer Jigra; the other being Vicky Vidya Ka Who Wala Video. Both the films were highly anticipated projects as one had a Filmfare Winner actress who had established herself in the industry as the lead; whereas the second one had an emerging actor whose last film became an All-Time Blockbuster.
Due to the release of Vettaiyan a day ago, both the films suffered to get a good amount of audience. Devara is still running in the theatres, Vettaiyan was released yesterday and Martin too released along with the two films to increase the competition even more. Both the films got a decent viewership. The collection they amassed cannot be called near the actual potential the stars carry. Still, it was interesting to see how till the end of the day a tug-of-war was seen between the films in leading the box office charts.
Earlier in the day, VVKWWV got a lead and was being highly appreciated by the audience. Slowly though, Jigra took charge and created a lead emerging as the winner of the day 1. It seems, the magic of Rajkummar Rao after giving an ATB Stree 2, did not effectively shine in this film. Or maybe the magic backfired as the hopes of people after Stree 2 were flooded over Rajkummar.
Analysis showed that Jigra was found leading in the metro cities whereas in relatively smaller cities like Bhopal, Indore, Mirzapur etc. VVKWWV got an advantage. This was a big factor in Jigra’s lead. Most of the audience that watch cinema come from these metro cities. The number of theatre goers is relatively less in smaller cities. Also, national chains are found mostly in the metro cities and not usually in the smaller towns. Jigra’s popularity in metro cities made it more likely for the film to win the competition.
Although Jigra has taken a lead after the first day’s closing; the difference will be clearer in the coming days. Factors like audience retention and word-of-mouth popularity will play a big role in maintaining the consistency of collections each day. If Jigra fails to impress the audience, it will soon lose popularity and struggle in keeping up with the others.
