Filmmaker Arindam Bhattacharjee has confirmed that he will shoot his next film ‘Shibpur 2’ in Hindi only. He has just finished with his upcoming movie ‘Durgapur Junction’ and has a ready screenplay for the Shibpur sequel with the actors returning to reprise their roles.
‘Shibpur’ was a period thriller that came out in 2023 and told the story of mafia, corruption and resistance from police forces in Bengal. The movie starred Swastika Mukherjee and Parambrata Chattopadhyay in leading roles and both of them have starred in multiple Hindi projects and are not unknown faces in the industry. But why is the director taking such a step?
Filmmaker Arindam Chattopadhyay has said that the Bengali film industry is making it more difficult to work as a producer and with the rules of federation they need to hire almost double the crew than actually needed, thus increasing the final cost. Also, the movies are not working well at the box office but the stars do not cut their fees no matter what. While actors from other industries try to support their producers and make the most of a movie within a short budget, the Bengali star culture (he claims) makes them devoted to the stars and not the story itself.
Arindam Chatterjee has previously worked in a few projects in Bollywood and is saying that the environment is a lot smoother and stimulating in the Hindi film industry and there is no guilt in migrating. But if this continues to happen, there will be no Bengali film industry here soon and there is nothing that we can do for now.
