India was never a market that Hollywood producers explored or even respected in the past. Yes, they were different times but the ignorance has persisted as recently as 5 years back.
Do you remember the release of Joker in India? It was released on the 2nd of October 2019 and did fairly good business in India.
But, it is nowhere near what Marvel films generally achieve in the Indian market. Why1.?
- The content was very dark.
- The magnanimous response to War.
- …….
And there was a third reason too.
Warner Bros Discovery did not even dub the film in any Indian language unlike what Marvel does.
So, where’s the lack?
The lack was in the way Warner Bros has been seeing India for so many years.
Now, Joker Folie à Deux is running and Warner Bros has become Warner Bros Discovery.
So, let’s make a fresh start.
The company today announced a long slate in India. It would be creating and bringing content simultaneously on OTT and TV.
Good news. But,
You see, Warner Bros is a baby in the Indian entertainment space. We are not questioning their legacy, but the Indian industry is totally different from what they do in the USA.
Unlike its competitor Disney, Warner Bros is very very late in India.
If they want to proliferate then they have to grow their understanding of the Indian entertainment space. We are sure they don’t want to struggle in the Indian market just like Netflix India did in its first 4 years of existence in India.
India is a tricky market and Warner Bros Discovery is a baby. Let’s see how they perform.
