Tumbbad, a 2018 movie that was originally released to be a flop, is now taking the center stage in the film industry. It was re-released in the theatres on 13th September and has proved to surpass even new releases in terms of collections and crowd gathering. As the film continues with its fantastic streak, it has broken several records in the meantime.
The film’s re-release is now about 10 days old and by the second Monday of its release, i.e., yesterday, the film had amassed a collection of 22.63 crores. When added with the film’s original collection (which amounts to about 12 crores), the value becomes 34 crores. The film is projected to run several more days and earn about 40 crores in its second run. This will give the movie a profit of multiple folds of its budget.
The film, on Monday, created a new record by breaking the record of Ghilli to become highest grossing re-release in India since the year 2000. Ghilli, before this had a gross earning of 26.50 crores. Tumbbad crossed the mark on Monday with 26.70 crores of gross collection. The film had previously surpassed re-releases like Sholay 3D (13 crores) and Laila Majnu (11.50 crores). And now it claims the top spot by beating Thalapathy Vijay starrer Ghilli.
The film has already turned about 140% of profit over its budget and is pacing forward to go big. It is also expected to go global with an ongoing deal for overseas theatrical rights of the film. Soon, it will gather international attention as well. This success of the film shows, indeed it was ahead of its time and the audience was not ready for such a raw and artistic film at the time.
