Just two days before the movie opens in theaters, the epic action drama Devara: Part 1, starring Janhvi Kapoor and Jr. NTR in the key roles, has ticket counters going crazy. The movie sold tickets worth Rs 50 crore globally, including over $2 million in the USA, during its pre-sale period, signaling the start of the Devara mass at the box office.
With 6.88 lakh tickets sold, the movie is expected to surpass Rs 30 crore in bookings in India. Most of the movie’s pre-sales in India came from its Telugu version, followed by its Tamil version. With such huge numbers in-store, there is a huge concern for the makers regarding the film’s Hindi version.
North India is now one of the weaker links. Still, on a positive note, things should improve because this market consistently performs better over time for a dubbed film with the appropriate material. Currently, it is anticipated that the movie will make between Rs. 8 and Rs. 10 crore in North India (including dubbed versions).
By looking at the promotional campaigns of the film, Devara has not been promoted well in the North Indian market. The only huge show where the cast was featured was the Great Indian Kapil Show which starred Jr NTR, Jahnvi Kapoor, and Saif Ali Khan. Another huge drawback for the film is the platform they chose to showcase their upcoming film. Kapil’s family entertainer has been a flop on Netflix since its arrival and recorded quite low views at the commencement of its second season.
With underwhelming support from the fans till now, Devara might struggle to create a huge impact on North India. Only time will tell how it will expand its business upon its theatrical release.
