Having been shelved for long, John Abraham’s ‘The Diplomat’ is finally set to see the light of the day. A Shivam Nair directorial, ‘The Diplomat’ is set to land in cinemas on 7th March, 2025.
‘The Diplomat’ was initially scheduled for release in January 2023 but was postponed indefinitely due to the blockbuster success of ‘Pathaan’. The film has been in shadows since then, waiting for the right time, which seems to have finally arrived.
Based on a true story, ‘The Diplomat’ follows an Indian diplomat who is on a mission to bring back an Indian girl from Pakistan who was probably forced to marriage against her will.
The plot finds a basic theme similarity to Neeraj Pandey’s web series ‘The Freelancer’ wherein a former police officer turned military freelancer undertakes a mission to rescue his friend’s daughter from ISIS in Syria, although she wasn’t forced for marriage but was certainly married under false pretexts.
This gets more interesting since Nair has been a long time associate of Pandey and has worked with him on projects like ‘Naam Shabana’ and ‘Special – OPS’.
As for John, he was last seen on the big screen in Nikkhil Advani’s ‘Vedaa’ which turned out to be box office dud and even the critics didn’t have much good to say about the film. Infact, John hasn’t seen a hit in a lead role in quite some time. While ‘Pathaan’ was a massive success, John wasn’t the lead hero in it.
His recent films like ‘Mumbai Saga’, ‘Satyamev Jayate 2, ‘Attack’, and ‘Ek Villain Returns’, all were huge failures and it wouldn’t be wrong to say John is going through a slump. Moreover, even his production ventures could not do well.
Much of this has been accredited to the fact that John hasn’t tried anything new in any of these films wherein he is seen doing only action. Whether ‘The Diplomat’ will help him get out of this slump or not is questionable as this film too belong to spy action drama category and the audience will obviously get to see John doing action. But how much is the question, because if done more than required it is bound to affect the overall performance of the film.
