SonyLIV has dropped its much-anticipated legal drama Court Kacheri a day ahead of its scheduled release, August 12 instead of August 13. The platform has not revealed why it decided to release Court Kacheri early, but it seems likely that SonyLIV wanted to avoid direct competition from Netflix’s next big release, Saare Jahan Se Accha, led by Pratik Gandhi.
Both Court Kacheri and Saare Jahan Se Accha were part of the crowded slate of releases for the Independence Day weekend in India, with both originally scheduled to debut on August 13. The former is a courtroom drama from TVF, starring Pavan Malhotra and Ashish Verma. It’s a comedic legal drama that explores a father–son relationship in a small-town district court.
Meanwhile, Saare Jahan Se Accha is a spy thriller starring Pratik Gandhi as a resilient Indian spy. It’s a high-stakes espionage drama set in the 1970s.
Dropping Court Kacheri early gives SonyLIV a 24-hour head start. Strategically, this seems wise, as Saare Jahan Se Accha clearly looks like a bigger show in terms of star cast, budget, story, and execution. That’s not to say TVF’s latest creation lacks online buzz, but Saare Jahan Se Accha appears to have the upper hand when it comes to generating and benefiting from massive online hype.
By avoiding the same release day as Saare Jahan Se Accha, Court Kacheri sidesteps the risk of being overshadowed. Moreover, a day-early release allows positive word-of-mouth to build momentum. If early viewers enjoy the show, their recommendations and social media posts can create organic buzz, often more effective than paid promotion, which can help the show stand out in a crowded content lineup.
SonyLIV’s early release strategy for Court Kacheri seems like a calculated move to maximise viewership and media attention for the original, while sidestepping a direct clash with a powerful rival like Saare Jahan Se Accha. Stay tuned for more updates.
