Punjabi singer and actor Diljit Dosanjh is continuing to solidify his global prominence and acting prowess. The international star has now earned a nomination at the 2025 International Emmy Awards for his sensational performance in Imtiaz Ali’s Amar Singh Chamkila (streaming on Netflix).
Dosanjh has been individually recognized in the category of Best Performance by an Actor for his work in the film. Additionally, Imtiaz Ali’s movie has received a nomination for Best TV Movie/Miniseries. In the film, Dosanjh plays the titular late Punjabi musician, while Parineeti Chopra portrays his on-screen wife, Amarjot Kaur.
Chamkila, often hailed as the “Elvis of Punjab,” was an immensely popular singer whose provocative songs captured the essence of rural Punjab in the 1980s. The film showcases captivating performances from its leading duo while exploring harsh but vital social realities, including conservatism, desire, and caste. Chamkila’s bold, controversial lyrics and commanding voice earned him instant fame across Punjab, and equally fierce criticism.
Following the announcement on the official International Emmys website, Diljit Dosanjh expressed his excitement on Instagram. The actor-singer stayed humble, crediting the film’s recognition entirely to director Imtiaz Ali, writing: “It’s all because of Imtiaz Ali Sir.”
This latest International Emmy nomination is yet another milestone in Diljit’s ever-growing global popularity. In 2023, he became the first Punjabi artist to perform at the prestigious Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in California. The following year, he appeared as a musical guest on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, where Fallon introduced him as “the biggest Punjabi artist on the planet.”
Moreover, Dosanjh’s world tours, including the record-breaking Dil-Luminati tour, have made history, with the largest Punjabi concert outside India taking place in Vancouver, Canada. He has also collaborated with major international artists like Sia (“Hass Hass”) and Camilo (“Palpita”). Stay tuned for more updates.
