Bollywood has been making several over-the-top films recently covering a wide range of action and violence. Amidst this chaotic phase, there are only a handful of films that display peace and affection in the most effectful way ever. One such underrated gem is Margarita With a Straw from 2014.
The film had one of the most influential yet surprising concepts of showcasing love and affection in those who certainly are never seen with that kind of feeling. Kalki Koechlin effortlessly plays a girl with cerebral palsy, a condition that affects the brain and causes issues with movement, balance, and posture.
The film peacefully follows her journey as she gets older and discovers her inner self. It also shows how Laila played by Kalki wants no support in her life despite being physically challenged. A ray of hope in her role is highlighted consistently connecting viewers with her inner self, which is nothing but a normal and kind-hearted girl.
It also shows how she discovers her sexuality and feelings adding a homosexual plot to the story. Sayani Gupta one of the bright stars in the film has a great bond with Laila throughout the story.
Directed by Shonali Bose, and written by Bose and Nilesh Maniyar, the film is a love letter to people having abnormalities and how they perceive everything in a much more sophisticated manner than everyone else. Her relationships with boys, girls, and her mother are one of the main highlights of the film throughout.
Netflix brings this masterpiece featuring Kalki Koechlin, Sayani Gupta, Revathi, and Tenzing Dalha. If you want to escape from the current massy and violent phase of cinema and want to watch something full of emotions and peace, Margarita with a Straw seems to be the perfect ride for you this weekend.
