Kajol’s Maa did show some fight during its theatrical run, grossing over INR 51 crores in total, but it still emerged as an average grosser. Now, it’s all set to arrive on Netflix on August 22. And its path towards a seamless and successful OTT release is filled with plenty of obstacles.
Yes, Independence Day weekend is gone, and it took plenty of big OTT releases with it. But that doesn’t mean the second half of August suffers from a complete lack of new titles.
Maa will face competition from plenty of titles upon its OTT debut, including Invasion Season 3 (Apple TV+), Maareesan (Netflix), Peacemaker Season 2 (JioHotstar), and Thalaivan and Thalaivii (Prime Video). Moreover, the upcoming K-drama Bon Appetit, Your Majesty has generated quite a buzz, and it could pull in strong viewership numbers in India on Netflix after its August 23 premiere.
Soon, Marvel’s Thunderbolts (JioHotstar, Aug 27), My Life with the Walter Boys Season 2 (Netflix, Aug 28), The Thursday Murders Club (Netflix, Aug 28), Metro In Dino (Netflix, Aug 29), and more will arrive.
While the competition is fierce, Maa has a few things working in its favour. As a mythological horror film and a spin-off of the hit movie Shaitaan, it already has a built-in audience of fans of that universe. The film also has the star power of Kajol, a veteran actress with a strong following. The film’s theatrical box office performance, while not a blockbuster, shows that it has a dedicated base of viewers.
Ultimately, the success of Maa’s digital release will depend on its ability to capture a slice of the crowded market and entice viewers who missed it in theatres. Stay tuned for more updates.
