SonyLIV launched ‘Freedom At Midnight’, it’s highest budget series till date, a couple of days ago and the series is getting some great reviews online. People are even claiming that director Nikkhil Advani has outdone himself in ‘Freedom At Midnight’.
Based on a book by Dominique Lapierre and Larry Collins ‘Freedom At Midnight’ is set in 1947, the year India got independence but also suffered from partition. The show tries to capture the India of that time and its turmoils as the nation burned due to the communal violence. It also follows the journey of our great leaders as they underwent moral and philosophical dilemmas and were often forced to take hard decisions.
People are praising the show for its mostly appropriate casting (barring Siddhant Gupta as Nehru and Chirag Vohra as Gandhi), impressive performances, the attention to details and the way it portrays facts of the time. The tension, the drama is captivating audience’s attention just as the makers would have wanted.
Politics around partition has been a sensitive and delicate topic and ‘Freedom At Midnight’ has dealt with it in a responsible and cautionary manner but still managed to be as raw as possible. Moreover, the show feels well researched with neat writing.
‘Freedom At Midnight’ might seem a bit slow for fast paced, action or thrill lovers but is definitely a treat for history and political buffs. Currently streaming on SonyLIV, ‘Freedom At Midnight’ can be a perfect binge watch for you this weekend.
