The release of Chiraiya on JioHotstar has ignited a firestorm of conversation across social media platforms such as Twitter (X). Starring the powerhouse Divya Dutta, this six-episode social drama has connected really well with Indian OTT viewers.
Since its debut on 20 March 2026, the series has received a highly positive reaction from a public hungry for stories that refuse to look away from uncomfortable truths.
Set in a supposedly progressive yet traditional household in Lucknow, Chiraiya tackles the disease of silence surrounding marital rape. The title itself, meaning “sparrow”, serves as a poignant metaphor for the female spirit, often caged by societal norms and so-called family honour.
The story follows Kamlesh (played by Divya Dutta), who is basically the perfect daughter-in-law everyone loves. Her life flips upside down when she finds out that the new bride, Pooja, is being abused by her own husband, who also happens to be Kamlesh’s favourite brother-in-law.
Instead of just telling her to accept it and stay quiet, as most shows do, we see Kamlesh start to question everything she was taught and decide to tear down the very rules she used to follow.
The friction between the older “silent” generation and the younger “vocal” generation creates the series’ emotional core. The show directly challenges the dangerous notion that a marriage certificate is a lifelong licence for access to a woman’s body.
The public reaction on social media to Chiraiya has been extremely positive. Viewers have praised the show and its leading lady, Divya Dutta. Apart from her, Sanjay Mishra’s work has also been well received among viewers.
Yes, the critical reception to the show has been more mixed, with some pointing out that it occasionally leans towards melodrama. But the overall consensus is that its intent outweighs its imperfections.

As a man watching #Chiraiya, I had to sit with some very uncomfortable realizations about things I've stayed silent on. that discomfort is necessary. watch it.pic.twitter.com/iBpTqTzLRD
